MOOREcycle began in 2009 with a challenge to create an opportunity for Moore students to get involved in cross-disciplinary activities that build school pride and energize the student body by bringing together the campus community. Listen to Moore’s Foundation chair Lynn Palewicz, and TerraCycle (https://www.terracycle.com) Senior Designer (and Moore Alum) Lori Anselm (‘87) discuss what MOORECycle is all about!
Student Services, who leads the project, has been making MOOREcycle an annual event that engages all members of the Moore community, while creating environmental awareness. Moore partners with TerraCycle, one of the fastest-growing green companies in the world. TerraCycle’s mission is to eliminate the idea of “waste” by converting post-consumer products of all kinds into a wide variety of useful wares and materials for major retailers, often through a process called “upcycling.”
Moore students upcycled materials provided by TerraCycle that would otherwise be put in a landfill, for art and design assignments. For MOOREcycle, the company donated enough raw materials to cover the length of both sides of The Parkway! The College was able to partner with TerraCycle thanks to the connection made by alumna Lori Anselm ‘87, a textile design major who is a project designer at the company.
Special thanks to:
TerraCycle is a proud triple-bottom line company
Founded in 2001 by Tom Szaky, then a 20-year-old Princeton University freshman, TerraCycle, Inc. began producing organic fertilizer by packaging liquified “worm poop” in used soda bottles. Since the inauspicious start, TerraCycle has become one of the fastest-growing green companies in the world.
More than just a recycling company, TerraCycle strives to be a driving force behind increasing environmental awareness and action. Their goal is to be a trusted resource for families, schools, communities, and even corporations to find tips, stats, facts, tactics, and news to help them live a greener, cleaner lifestyle. They are Eliminating the Idea of Waste®.
Today, TerraCycle is a highly-awarded, international upcycling and recycling company that collects difficult-to-recycle packaging and products and repurposes the material into affordable, innovative products. TerraCycle is widely considered the world’s leader in the collection and reuse of non-recyclable, post-consumer waste.
TerraCycle works with more than 100 major brands in the U.S. and 22 countries overseas to collect used packaging and products that would otherwise be destined for landfills. It repurposes that waste into new, innovative materials and products that are available online and through major retailers.
